The Southington Town Council has passed a resolution opposing the collection and incineration of biomedical waste at the Reworld facility in Bristol and has sent a formal letter to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to deny Reworld’s application.
Southington has asked DEEP and the Connecticut Department of Public Health “to conduct a thorough review of the potential health and safety risks associated with this proposal, including the implementation of continuous emissions monitoring, and to take necessary actions to protect the residents of Southington and the surrounding communities” and “to engage with local stakeholders… in assessing the full negative impacts of the [proposal] and to consider alternative waste management solutions that do not compromise public health, safety, or the environment.”
According to Paul Chaplinsky, Town Council Chair: “The Southington Town Council continues to stand firm in our opposition to the ReWorld Bristol incinerator application to burn hazardous biomedical infectious waste without full disclosures regarding the specific waste, how they will be handled, how employees and our residents will be protected, how they will measure and monitor continuously to ensure safe practices, transportation, and also the ongoing noise complaints that our community and the neighboring communities deserve to have resolved before new business applications are considered. This letter and a Town Council resolution standing against the application was passed last night. It is being submitted to the State of Connecticut DEEP.”
